This sculpture relate to an incident where the Manager of this estate, fearing for his life because of a group of elephants that scavenge the area around his wooden hut at night, obtained a permission to exterminate the elephants. The Mah Meri believe that whoever kills an elephant ( merat ) would have an excruciating pain in the ears and will result in death. This image of the elephant was made as an
offering to pacify the spirit of the merat and serve as a reminder not to kill elephants.
